JAMES COULTAS, RESIDENT OF THE MONTH
James Coultas was born on April 6, 1917, in a town
called Lankershim, now known as North Hollywood. His
family on his mother's side were the first family in
town, notes this California native. His dad's family was
born and raised in Oxnard, California. Jim is one of
three siblings, his brother being 14 months older and
his sister 8 years younger than he. When Jim thinks back
to his birth date, he also remembers it as being a
historical day. It was the day the United States
declared war against Germany.
Jim went to Lankershim Grammar School and then continued
his education locally, graduating from North Hollywood
High in 1937. He was very active as a youth and excelled
in athletics. Jim was an outstanding member of the
school basketball team, on which he played for four
years. He was so good in sports that often the adults
did not want to play against him! He also loved to swim
and sail and was a true expert out on the ocean.
Eventually Jim would own his own sailboat, and for 15
years he embraced his passion. He named his boat "Lady
Pat," after his wife Pat.
Jim's first employment was with the Auto Club of
Southern California, where he worked for five years
until the war started. He then entered the Merchant
Marines and continued to be active in so many things.
Jim learned to cook and continued in the profession for
12 years. He also worked as a carpenter, a homebuilder
and, later, a lighting electrician in the motion picture
industry, including Universal Studios. He even did his
own bit in a comedy routine as "Cleaning Lady" for the
local Kiwanis Club. Jim also loves music and is a great
dancer. Reflecting on his versatile past and wonderful
family life, which includes six children of his own,
five boys and one girl, Jim figures he could not have
been born and raised in a better place. California has
and always will be home.

A NOTE FROM ROBIN, DIRECTOR OF ACTIVITIES
Hello everyone! The weather was finally on our side for
an early April outing to the Moorpark Teaching Zoo for
"Spring Spectacular." It turned out to be a lot of fun
with the highlight show "Peter Pan and the Perils of a
Pixie," which featured a variety of animals, pirates,
and Tinkerbell, of course! I especially loved the exotic
birds and primate gardens. We were able to walk around
and enjoy the sunshine... for a change of pace! Our
March outing at the World War II Aviation Museum in
Camarillo was excellent. Our docent, Charlie, walked us
through two massiave hangers complete with exhibits,
artifacts, and a number of vintage war birds. It was
exciting to learn about the historical aircraft. These
monthly bus trips are a real treat if you enjoy getting
away for a special event afternoon. Remember, too we
also have our leisure ride on Sundays, another good way
to unwind and view some sights! For those stay-at-home
residents, we have many programs for you, including
entertainment, crafts, games, movies, and more! Our St.
Patrick's Day Party was so festive with all the
decorations and delicious treats. Entertainment was
sensational, with two days of grand celebrations
featuring Irish music by Joe McAlevey and Bruce Colell.
Check out the photos in this issue, as I have included
pictures of these very special entertainers. Great
times! For April, the Easter holiday featured a big game
day in the activity room, complete with Easter baskets
and prize-filled eggs for all. This month, in honor of
Mother's Day, a real highlight will include an elegant
catered tea party for the ladies. Also, a much
anticipated visit to the Reagan Library will take place
on May 16th. This will be a full tour, so be prepared
for a very exciting event. I'll fill you all in come the
next newsletter. Meanwhile get out and enjoy the warmer
weather, keep exercising, and join us for activities!
See you out and about. Happy Mother's Day!
